What is a Domain Name?
In its simplest form, a Domain name is just an internet website address. The actual address used by computers is numerical in format and is referred to as an IP (Internet Protocol) address (for example: 196.34.149.154) and as you can see, it’s not the easiest format to remember. The Domain “name” system was created and has made remembering and referring of websites much easier and creative.
Why do you need a Domain Name?
In the business world, domain names are as common as telephone and fax numbers. If your advertisements or business cards do not display a domain name, you run the risk of being passed over by customers that prefer to browse merchandise and services online. A good domain name is vital for a business’s branding and awareness, but more importantly aids in protecting copyrights, trademarks and product information.
For individuals, Domains allow families, authors, artists etc. the opportunity to register a unique and memorable address which can promote your cause. For instance if your name is Tom Smith, you could try and get the Domain name of “tomsmith.co.za”, so anyone looking for you online would easily find you. If you had a family website then a Domain name such as “smithfamily.co.za” would give it a nice touch.
What is ICANN?
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Internet Solutions was recently appointed the ICANN accreditation and is the only ISP in Africa with this capability. This means IS deals directly with the registries and can provide quicker response times and competitive pricing.
Internet Solutions can continue to deliver a full diversity of Internet communication solutions which now includes the ability to register many Top Level Domains (LTD’s). for example: .com (Commercial), .org (Non profit) and even country specific such as .za (South Africa).
Add Grace Period (AGP)
A grace period refers to a specified number of calendar days following a gTLD registry operation in which the operation may be reversed and a credit may be issued to a Registrar. The Add Grace Period (AGP) is typically the five-day period following the initial registration of a domain name. AGP appears as a contractual term in some, but not all gTLD registry agreements.
Currently, when a domain name is registered through a Registrar, that Registrar (Internet Solutions) may delete the domain name at any time during the first five calendar days of the registration (the Add Grace Period or AGP), The Registrant will then receive full credit from Internet Solutions. Once a domain name is deleted by the registry at this stage, it is immediately available for registration by any registrant through any Registrar.
AGP was intended to allow for the no-cost cancellation of domain name registrations resulting from typos and other errors by Registrars and registrants as well as some types of fraudulent registrations.
The Operator will be responsible for payment of registry-level fees to ICANN for any transactions that do not result in a refund of the registration fee. Operators should process and resolve all exemption requests on or before the last day of the month following the month the request was submitted and only in rare cases should the exemption review and resolution time exceed 30 days.
Domains that are set to auto renew will be renewed automatically without notification, unless otherwise specified. Domains that are not renewed will be deleted after 7 working days of the renewal date.
All .co.za domains registered through Uniforum SA will be automatically renewed unless cancellation of the domain is requested in writing. Uniforum gives a grace period up to count 5. This is a period of 4 to 6 months, thereafter the domain will be deleted permanently.
