Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing has been all the rage with many business benefits cited in the drive to get businesses to move to this new way of conducting business. The question is, however, whether companies understand the true benefits of Cloud Computing, or whether they are just “computing in the cloud”. This is the view of Greg Montjoie, General Manager Hosting Solutions at Internet Solutions.

“There is a distinct difference between computing in the cloud and true Cloud Computing,” says Montjoie. “Computing in the cloud is basically when a person accesses specific applications via the internet to perform computing tasks.” Cloud Computing on the other hand is so much more, allowing for seamless maintenance, migration and optimisation of hardware, regardless of geographic location. “As with any technology, companies really need to look at the full spectrum of features to ensure they maximise the benefits they derive from changing the way in which they operate,” he says.

“Some organisations have used Cloud Computing to use their hardware and networks more effectively by utilising them across time zones,” says Montjoie. “So when it’s daytime in for example London, those servers are running at near full capacity, whilst those in Tokyo are running only the basics,” he says. Likewise when it is evening in London, capacity will be cut to a minimum whilst allowing for Tokyo’s servers to run at full steam. “The beauty of Cloud Computing in this instance is that it is a seamless automated process that the user is completely unaware of.”

A number of benefits have been cited relating to Cloud Computing, including agility. “This type of infrastructure allows companies to make the best use of their infrastructure at all times, whilst also allowing for complete redundancy,” says Montjoie. This means that if a specific server is down or is not running at optimal efficiency, processes can be diverted to another server, without the user even noticing.

According to Montjoie reliability, performance and interoperability are key features that underpin Cloud Computing. “This delivers a new dimension of availability and ensures that resources are allocated to business priorities in the true sense of the word,” he concludess.
