Client Overview
WSP Group Africa is part of WSP Group PLC, a global design, engineering and management consultancy, specialising in projects for the property, transport and environmental sectors.
Due to the nature of its operations in Africa, WSP has a head office in Johannesburg, branch offices located in Durban and Cape Town and temporary site-offices that are set up for a two-year period, either close to or on its clients’ construction sites.
Business Overview
This decentralised model has meant that WSP has, since its inception, had a strong requirement for a reliable, quick and cost-effective Wide Area Network (WAN) that connected the company’s multiple geographically disparate locations together.
The initial long haul leased-line network it had in place, which connected only three of its branches was proving too costly, so in 2003 WSP went in search of a more cost-effective WAN solution that would deliver improved capacity, as well as the ability to connect more of its branches to the WAN.
Solution Provided
After investigating a number of different technologies and options, WSP decided to run a Virtual Private Network (VPN) over the Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) backbone of one of South Africa’s enterprise Internet Service Providers (ISPs) other than Internet Solutions.
The solution went some way towards solving the challenges WSP faced in connecting all of its offices and their accompanying staff members to a single corporate network, but issues with the stability and performance of that provider’s network forced it to look at switching service providers within a year of migrating to MPLS, which is when they turned to Internet Solutions.
